Sunderland ADHD Support Group was first established in September 2008 by a parent who couldn't find any help or support for her son who was diagnosed with ADHD/ODD at the age of 10. The group is now steadily expanding.
We adopted the Group's Constitution in the beginning of 2009 and our next step is to become a registered charity. Our aim as a group is to raise awareness of ADHD and co existing disorders within all public bodies and organizations. We aim to empower and provide support, understanding and information about ADHD and co existing disorders to parents and carers of children and young people with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and those working within the professional field.
Sunderland ADHD Support Group is run by volunteers who themselves are parents and carers of ADHD children and young people. Age range of children are from 6 years old up to 19 years old so the volunteers have a great deal of understanding and knowledge of how to live and cope with ADHD.
If anyone tells you dealing with and raising a child with special needs is easy then take little notice. Dealing with children who present complex learning patterns or challenging behaviour will stretch you to your very limits.
The meetings are held monthly at The Carer's Centre, Toward Road, Sunderland, room open from 10.30am, meeting starts at 11.00am until 1.00pm but volunteers are still available if anyone needs one to one support. The meetings are very informal with Tea, coffee and refreshments available and there are regular guest speakers from the professional field.
The group is now able to offer some services which include a Library, one to one support, group support, information about ADHD and co existing disorders and telephone helpline.
So come along let us support you because ADHD is REAL.
